BOOK ILLUMINATION

Book painting or illumination is a genre of art that deals with the painted decoration of books. The term "illumination" comes from Latin and means something like "lighting." The painting was intended to bring "light into the pages," especially through the use of gilding.

The almost meditative work of the medieval illuminators and their imaginative tendrils with which they framed the written text have always fascinated me. Since 2013 I have been working as a book illustrator, mainly for the Gutenberg Shop in Mainz, and I still enjoy it as much as I did at the beginning.

I also do freelance work and offer, among other things, individually and personally designed initials—perfect as a gift or as an eye-catcher in your own four walls. Take a look around my shop or write me a message if you have a special request.

Hi, I'm Julia!

I've been passionate about art from an early age, especially painting portraits and animals. After school, I pursued book studies, German studies, and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Master’s in 2012, PhD in 2017).

During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, particularly the fascinating transition from manuscripts to mass-produced books, where hand-painted details still made each copy unique.

In 2013, I began painting reproductions of Gutenberg Bible pages, combining my love for art with my academic background. Since then, I’ve worked as a freelance artist, specializing in illumination. Over time, I’ve received many questions about my techniques, and now, I’m excited to share my knowledge.
