Medieval Art Retreat
in a German Castle
4-6 October 2025
An exclusive experience for lovers of medieval art, where you’ll deepen your knowledge, connect with like-minded souls, and live your passion in the magical setting of an authentic medieval castle.
Live a Medieval Dream with Julia, in a German Castle
Imagine waking up in a 1,000-year-old castle perched on a hilltop, surrounded by vineyards and foggy valleys, with gothic arches and stone walls whispering stories of ancient times.
For three unforgettable days, you’ll dive deep into the art of the Middle Ages — from illuminated artworks to sacred symbolism, under my guidance, with other aspiring artists as passionate as you.
This is not just a retreat. It’s an immersive journey into the beauty, mystery, and magic of medieval art, shared with people who are just as obsessed with it as you are.

A Full Immersion in History, Art & Connection
During these three days, you’ll live inside a real medieval castle, learn with me in hands-on workshops, connect with fellow medieval art lovers, and soak in the atmosphere of a setting pulled straight from a manuscript page.

Medieval Art Workshops
Three exclusive workshops with me, where you’ll learn the core techniques of medieval art, from painting letters, foliage and animals to layout and storytelling. All designed for total beginners and advanced learners alike.

Practice & Feedback
You’ll have time to refine your technique, ask questions, and get live feedback, whether you're working on your first illuminated initial or perfecting your composition.

A Like-Minded Community
This retreat is about art, but it’s also about people. You’ll share meals, creative moments, and late-night castle conversations with others who share your passion, forming new friendships that feel like they were meant to be.

A Truly Breathtaking Setting
The medieval hilltop castle of Burg Staufenberg, nestled in the Hesse wine region, offers sweeping views of the valley, cobblestone courtyards, and authentic medieval charm, with all the comfort of a boutique hotel.
Where We’ll Stay:
Burg Staufenberg Castle Hotel

Step into history. Burg Staufenberg is a genuine 13th-century castle turned hotel, where each room has its own unique charm: from wooden-beamed ceilings to panoramic views of the German countryside. You’ll feel like a medieval noble for the weekend (minus the plague and arranged marriages).
This castle is more than just a place to sleep, it’s the soul of the retreat, an inspiration in stone and ivy, where every corridor sparks your imagination and every corner is begging to be sketched.
Medieval Flavors at the Castle Tavern
The castle’s on-site restaurant serves regional German cuisine with a touch of medieval flair — think roast meats, hearty stews, fresh bread, and local wines. Meals will be shared in the atmospheric dining hall or on the terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Quiet Luxury in the Rooms
Every room at Burg Staufenberg combines medieval elegance with modern comfort. Cozy beds, castle-style interiors, and views that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy novel. Expect quiet mornings, soft lighting, and the kind of peace you only find in places steeped in history.

Learn with Julia:
3 Exclusive Medieval Art Workshops
Whether you’re an experienced artist or a curious beginner, these workshops will help you unlock the secrets of medieval art and bring the past to life on the page.

Workshop 1:
The Language of Light
In this introductory session, we’ll explore the layout and composition of illuminated manuscripts. You’ll learn the structure behind medieval pages, how to create balance and rhythm, and how to sketch your own initial inspired by historical models.
Workshop 2:
Gold & Glory
This session focuses on the decorative elements: foliage and patterns. You’ll experiment with metallic accents, rich colors, and fine ornaments to make your work shine (literally) and finish your illuminated initial.
Workshop 3:
Painting the Past
In the final workshop, you'll create an illuminated miniature to immerse yourself in the medieval animal world and learn how to breathe life into a creature with simple layers of paint.

Hi, I'm Julia!
Embark on this exciting journey together! Let's transform surfaces into luminous works of art, I specialize in the ancient art of illumination, where rich colors and gold leaf meets timeless elegance
You may know me on Instagram as @bookillumination.
I have been interested in art from an early age and have painted and drawn a lot - primarily portraits and animals. After school, I studied book studies, German studies and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (master's degree in 2012, PhD in 2017).
During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, among other things. I was fascinated by the transitional phase between the manuscript era and letterpress printing, when the new technology made it possible to mass-produce texts, but the initials and decorations added by hand still made each copy unique.
Since then, I have been working part-time as a freelance artist and have specialized in the field of illumination. There are not so many artists in this particular niche, but many continue to be fascinated by this historical art form. I get a lot of questions about the materials and techniques and often whether I give workshops. Over the years, I've acquired quite a bit of knowledge about illumination and since I've realized, that others want to learn too, I'd like to finally share my knowledge with you.

Through my studies, I came into contact with the Gutenberg Museum and the Gutenberg Foundation in Mainz. The latter manages the Gutenberg Shop and sells, among other things, reproductions of individual pages from the Gutenberg Bible - as in the original with the printed text and coloring by hand. Here I saw the opportunity to combine my passion for painting and my theoretical knowledge and started painting these pages in 2013.
