Hi, I'm Julia!
I've been passionate about art from an early age, especially painting portraits and animals. After school, I pursued book studies, German studies, and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Master’s in 2012, PhD in 2017).
During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, particularly the fascinating transition from manuscripts to mass-produced books, where hand-painted details still made each copy unique.
In 2013, I began painting reproductions of Gutenberg Bible pages, combining my love for art with my academic background. Since then, I’ve worked as a freelance artist, specializing in illumination. Over time, I’ve received many questions about my techniques, and now, I’m excited to share my knowledge.

COURSE CONTENT
In this course, you will learn how to paint dragons in the style of medieval book illumination, progressing from the fundamentals to creating a complete illuminated miniature. Designed for both beginners and advanced students, the course begins with essential techniques and gradually develops your skills, increasing in complexity as you advance.
Spanning a total of 6 modules and more than 5 hours of content, you’ll explore the historical significance and symbolic meaning of dragons in medieval illumination while learning to paint them yourself. After a historical introduction, we will draw and paint different dragon forms together, practicing essential techniques such as sketching from simple shapes, painting scales and wings, adding texture, and mastering luminous details with gouache. Each module builds on the previous one, culminating in the final project where you’ll design and complete your own stunning illuminated dragon artwork. By the end of the course, you’ll have created a beautiful medieval-style masterpiece of your own.
