Hi, I'm Julia!
I've been passionate about art from an early age, especially painting portraits and animals. After school, I pursued book studies, German studies, and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Master’s in 2012, PhD in 2017).
During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, particularly the fascinating transition from manuscripts to mass-produced books, where hand-painted details still made each copy unique.
In 2013, I began painting reproductions of Gutenberg Bible pages, combining my love for art with my academic background. Since then, I’ve worked as a freelance artist, specializing in illumination. Over time, I’ve received many questions about my techniques, and now, I’m excited to share my knowledge.

COURSE CONTENT
In this course, you will learn how to paint animals in the style of medieval book illumination, progressing from the basics to creating a complete miniature. Designed for both beginners and advanced students, the course starts with simple techniques and gradually refines your skills, increasing the level of difficulty as you advance.
Spanning a total of 7 modules for more than 9 hours of content, you’ll explore the historical importance and symbolic meaning of animals in medieval illumination while learning to paint them yourself. After a historical introduction, we will draw and paint six animals together: a serpent, dolphin, rabbit, cat, horse, and eagle. For each animal we’ll practice different painting techniques, culminating in the final module where you’ll design and complete your own illuminated artwork featuring the eagle. By the end of the course, you’ll have created a stunning medieval-style work of art!
